HW after Heat Day 1
Thursday Night for Galileos and Einsteins, Friday night for Newtons:
Read in The Physics Classroom, Tutorial, Thermal Physics, Lesson 1: Methods of Heat Transfer.
Remember that hot things have more KE than cool things, and that heat flows from hot things to cool things. This lesson describes three ways in which the heat can be transferred. For each method: conduction, convection and radiation, describe how the KE of the atoms in each substance is changed.

The Doppler Effect
Galileos and Einsteins, Thursday:
I am home with my son who is sick. Please look in the Waves folder for lecture slides on The Doppler Effect, and fill in the notes on "Notes to go with Doppler Effect." You should also review these images and animations below.
Imagine each of these dots is bobbing up and down on the surface of water, creating waves.

The dot on the left is does not move side to side as it bobs. The dot on the right moves right.
Here's another view:
In the beginning the engine of the car is making sound, but the car is stationary. Any observer would head the same pitch (frequency) sound. Once the car starts moving to the left, the sounds waves to the left (in front of the car) are compressed, and the waves to the right (behind the car) are stretched. How would an observer in front of the car hear the engine, compared to one behind the car?
Google a video of the Concorde producing a sonic boom.
No homework over vacation...have a nice break!
Now observe what happens to the frequency in front of the source vs. behind the source.
A similar effect can happen with sounds waves:

By Monday morning...
As some of you know already, I will be taking a personal day on Thursday. For the next few nights AND during class on Thursday you should work on the following assignments. You can do them in any order you want; they just need to be done by Monday morning.
Newtons Tuesday night should do V = IR practice (see previous blog post)
If you get all this done and you are looking for something to do:
Check Aspen to make sure you have everything turned in. All the columns with assignments are posted, even if the grades aren't. You should make sure that for every column heading in Apsen you have that assignment turned in to your folder.
Newtons Tuesday night should do V = IR practice (see previous blog post)
- Complete the graphs, slope calculations and questions for the Ohm's Law lab (document title is V vs I graphing).
- Complete "Graphing Practice for Current." Remember to properly label axes, use consistent scales, calculate slope.
- Complete "Series Circuits Problems." Remember the chart! The chart is FAIL-SAFE if you check your work!
- AND....complete "More Series Circuits Problems." Lots of practice!!
Galileos- I will see you next on Monday.
Einsteins- I will see you Tuesday afternoon, then again on Monday.
Newtons- I won't miss any class time with you- we have lots of time together coming up! Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. But you should still have all this done by Monday (we might be able to spend some time on Friday working on this).
If you get all this done and you are looking for something to do:
Check Aspen to make sure you have everything turned in. All the columns with assignments are posted, even if the grades aren't. You should make sure that for every column heading in Apsen you have that assignment turned in to your folder.

HW after electrostatics quiz
Read the following section in The Physics Classroom:
Physics Tutorial: Current Electricity: Lesson 2: What is an Electric Circuit? Also here.
Questions to answer while reading:
How is electric potential similar to gravitational potential? Hint: imagine the charges "falling" from the top plate to the bottom plate.
Why would charge flow more easily through the "charge pipe" (wire) than through air?
To keep current flowing, what must happen to the charges once they "fall" down to the negative plate?
Define an electric circuit.

Test Corrections and HW on Electrostatics
First- Energy Test corrections.
You may do test corrections up to a 37/52 if you earned less than 37/52. To earn points back you must record your work on another piece of paper or on a Notability document. Please turn the original test back as well.
For MC problems- indicated correct answer as well as an explanation OR calculation showing the correct answer. MC problems that are not explained will not get credit.
Problem # 1( Roller Coaster): Show all work. You must set up the energy problem with a table, like you did in the Roller Coaster HW problem (go back in look in the Energy folder at that document, if necessary.)
Lab Practical:
Recall you had a cart going down a ramp. You task is to find the velocity of the cart as it passes the blue tape marked on the ramp.
1. Explain what three measurements you need to make.
2. Set up a table as in the roller coaster problem.
3. Either use the measurements you originally made, or make up some reasonable numbers to plug in.
4. Show your work in the three energy calculations that are needed to solve this problem.
And now for the homework....
In complete sentences answer Qs 1-10 at the end of Ch 32 in the electrostatics reading. Put this in your drive folder. Galileos and Einsteins are doing this over the weekend; Newtons are doing this Monday night.
